Is it safe to travel to Mexico?

How to find the safest places in Mexico for a vacation.

Recent news reports indicate that approximately 12,000 people a year die in the drug war. Most are Mexican citizens. Most of the deaths are gruesome and highly publicized. Few have anything to do with tourists. It is probably safer to vacation in Mexico than most places around the world.

Although the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs has identified hot spots where they do not recommend travel, there are still many places for tourists to visit and have a safe and comfortable, inexpensive vacation.

Travel agencies are well aware of all of the trouble spots. They want you to have a great vacation and come back with a desire to do it again next year. If you are looking for great ideas for a Mexican vacation, you would do well to start with a trusted travel agency.

Here is a little known tip for Mexico vacations - If you are member of Costco, they have the best rates and will do everything in their power to make your vacation the best you have ever had!

They can make all arrangements for you. Many places in Mexico offer guided tours to certain areas. Retired people love to go to Mexico because you get so much value for your travel dollar. You can probably save even more by finding a guided tour or cruise ship vacation.

Northern Mexico - Safest Travel Spots

Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of Baja California is considered safe for tourists. A lot of music legends visit Cabo regularly. Sammy Hagar of Van Halen and three other members of the band frequent their club, Cabo Wabo.

The weather is good year round and Cabo has a tropical, arid climate. It is near the desert, yet situated on good beaches of the Pacific Ocean. The scuba diving is excellent as is the world class sport fishing industry.

Boredom is rare in Cabo as the list of activities available is long. Parasailing, snorkeling, desert ATV adventures, scuba diving and golf are all popular. This is a young person's night life kind of place. There is a lot of money and celebrity sightings.

Boating and yachting enthusiasts love the Sea of Cortez area for living onboard their boats. My favorite author, Jinx Swartz, has written the best books from her adventures in Baja and the North Western parts of Mexico. She is a Texan and a world traveler. Check Amazon for her books. They are perfect reading for any Mexico vacation or mystery adventure story!

For all of the rest of Northern Mexico, travel advisories are in effect and even the famous Copper Canyon train ride is now considered a danger for tourists. All of the states in the northern area, especially those on the border near the U.S. are constantly involved with the drug war.

Areas in Central Mexico considered safest for travelers.

Most of central Mexico is considered safe to visit and only a few travel advisories are in effect. Some popular places that were once popular tourist spots have seen a rise in violence and drug trafficking and should be avoided. Veracruz, Acapulco, Manzanillo, Ixtapa, Zihuatenejo, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Morelia and Cuernavaca have travel advisories now. Extreme caution is recommended while visiting these areas as violence against tourists have escalated in recent years.

Mexico City is a very large city and has seen crimes against tourists go up. Any large city, such as New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, etc. has a high crime rate in general. Standard precautions would apply in all cities of the world.

The rest of central Mexico is worth seeing and exploring. The people are friendly and willingly treat you like family. They are proud to show off their country and will take you to places that are truly spectacular. Learning the Spanish language will open doors that few tourists get to see.

My favorite city in central Mexico is Guanajuato, Guanajuato. It is the capitol of the state of Guanajuato. This city is built into a spectacular mountain gorge. There is a lovely university here that is made of white granite that sparkles all day long. There is a Spanish Castle, several silver mines and narrow cobblestone streets. Tours of the city are readily available and will take you around to see all of the highlights of the city. To visit here, one must fly into Gualalajara and take a bus to Guanajuato. It is definitely worth the trip.

The Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico - Safest and Most Visited Vacation areas.

The Yucatan Peninsula - Easy flights from Texas!

The Yucatan and Quintana Roo area of Mexico are so drastically different from the rest of the country that it is not recognizable as Mexico. This is Maya territory. The Maya were Native Americans of Southern Mexico, Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. They never surrendered to the Spanish Conquistadors and actually desired to annex with Texas instead of Mexico.

The Mayans are super intelligent and have built cities and pyramids that endure to this day. Most of these have become tourist attractions, but the location of the peninsula surrounded by the warm Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean ocean are the true jewels of the Yucatan.

Merida is nicknamed the Paris of Mexico. The streets are clean and well ordered. The buildings are sparkling white for the most part and the climate is fantastic. The entire northern coast of the Yucatan borders the southern Gulf of Mexico and the beaches are relaxed and uncrowded. In the Northeast of the Yucatan is Progresso, a frequent stop for cruise lines and tours of the Pink Flamingo nesting grounds are available. Tours to Mayan ruins can also be scheduled from Merida.

Cancun, Isla de Mujeres, and Cozumel are government developed resorts. This side of the Yucatan is in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The astonishing blue waters of the Caribbean create the fabulous beaches for these resorts and vacation dreams. Many all-inclusive deals are available from travel agencies in the U.S.A.

Major cruise lines stop in Cozumel at the International Pier that was built by Mexico to attract tourists. Now it is possible to visit one of the top ten scuba diving locations in the world with a qualified excursion guide.
